Kai-Michael Toellner did his PhD in germinal centre biology under guidance of Prof. Johannes Gerdes at the Borstel Research Centre in the 1990s. He then joined the team of Ian MacLennan, University of Birmingham for postdoctoral research, working on cellular interactions during antigen-induced B cell differentiation. He later became a Professor of Adaptive Immunology at University of Birmingham.
